Adams Original Folder 24" Shifter 7sp Trail-A-Bike 24" 7 speed Pewter Review

Before buying this product I was concerned that 24" is rather large for a trail-a-bike. But it turned out to be excellent for a 7 to 8-year old child. The seat can be adjusted to accommodate younger or older kids. My son really enjoys the 7-speed which helps a lot when we climb a hill. In many ways he likes it better than his own bike because we can travel long distances in the nearby state park, and go much faster. Like all trail-a-bikes, there is a bit of wobbling when your child tilts it from one side to another. But in time both you and your child get better at it, and stop wobbling.

The bike is nicely built and is easy to assemble. We don't use the folder at all but it is good to know that you have the option. So, yes, this bike is fairly expensive. But I think it is definitely worth the price.

TUG-A-BUG Trail A Bike Gray Folding Trailer by Sun Review

I purchased one of these.The folding mechanism bent badly the first time I tried to fold it.It is very heavy.The attachment mechanism requires that you slip a washer in between the attachment forks and the sleeve for the bolt.It is very awkward and time consuming.The welds are rough.You should either buy the cheapest thing you can find - it can't be any worse than this , or spend more money and get one that is better designed and better built.

Trail-Gator Child Bike Tow Bar Review

Puchased this last week and installed it relatively easly.Being a bit particular, I had a tough time getting the the kid's bike to trail straight behind the adults, and to stand straight upright.The first adjustment turned out to be a bit easier to accomplish then the second.

Seemed to work well, although I don't think I'd like to push the listed weight limit of 100lbs (didn't seem like it had a big margin).Very easiy and quick to hook-up the two bikes, but there are 2 things that you'll have to remember to do or you could have an injurred little rider (but the instructions do a fine job of warning you).

The kid's bike is supposed to have a front wheel ground-clearance of 3-5 inches, which means that if you're careful during the installation then you'll be able to adjust the adult seat height for different riders (for us it's the difference between my wife and me).

You'll pretty quickly learn the tricks, like turning the adult bike 90 degress to the kid's bike when you're parking them (which allows the adult kickstand to work).We had a 2 wheel trailer before, and this feels a bit different due to the kid moving around.If you've got a heavy kid and light adult it could take some getting used to.But, it is easier and lighter to pull this then the trailer, and the kid really does help with peddling (just make sure they don't try to peddle backward).

As an odd application, it occured to me that it would work well to transport an empty bike for somebody else to ride (i.e. how do you use your own bike to also pull an empty bike for somebody else to use at your destination).If you've got a frequent need for this, then it might work with even a full-sized bike.The installation effort wouldn't make it worthwhile for a short, single use, but it's an interesting idea.

Overall I think it's well made and a good purchase.It comes with a number of parts for fitting different bikes, and you can go to the manufacture's web page for a PDF instructions if you want to figure out in advance whether it'll work with your equipment.In terms of the equpment you get, it's a bit more expensive then the single-wheel tag-alongs, but the dollars out of pocket are considerably less, it's less equipment to store, your kid will get practice on their own bike, and it'll likely retain a good deal of its value for resale.

WeeRide Co-Pilot Bike Trailer Review

I agree with the other reviewers regarding the excellent build quality of this "trailer bike."I was very skeptical about the quality, given the unbelievable price (compare to Trek etc.), but decided to give it a shot anyway.

Setup was pretty easy.The only problem was that the seatpost wouldn't go all the way into the frame, which was a must in order for my 4.5 yr old to ride.I needed to jam a scrap metal pipe into the frame's seat tube a couple times in order to knock loose some chunks of metal flashing that were preventing the seatpost from going all the way in.Once that was done though, everything was great.As for attaching to the lead bike, there is a "hitch receiver" that bolts onto the seatpost of the lead bike.The lead bike needs 2 inches of exposed seatpost in order to attach the hitch receiver.The WeeRide attaches to the hitch receiver exactly as would an automobile trailer hitch, except that the WeeRide comes with a quick release bolt for easy attachment/detachment to/from the lead bike.The hinge for folding the WeeRide is also secured by a quick release bolt.Those two quick releases are all you need to mess with when you want to go for a ride.Very simple!

The bike is *almost* too big for my 4.5 yr old daughter to ride.She was freaked out at first because, even with the seat all the way down, she can't touch the ground with her feet.And the hinged coupling between the seatpost "hitch" and the WeeRide frame has a little play in it, so it felt a bit wobbly to my daughter at first.But once she got used to the idea that she's firmly attached to Dad's bike, and Dad's bike doesn't tip over :) , she started to enjoy herself.More about fit:the crankarms on the WeeRide are pretty long, so I expect my kids to be able to enjoy it for as long as we want to.It will take a *very* long time for the kids to physically outgrow this bike.

A few thoughts about safety.First of all, the WeeRide does not have any braking capability.The copilot's choices are to pedal or to freewheel.This is good, since it ensures that the copilot can't lock up the back wheel.It seems like that might potentially cause problems (think jackknifed 18-wheelers).Second, the "pilot," or lead bicyclist, needs to avoid bumps as much as possible, and if not possible, the pilot needs to warn the copilot, just as on a tandem bike.The copilot can *not* see straight ahead when riding!Third, the pilot must avoid any sudden movements if possible.Don't stop too hard, accelerate too suddenly, or turn too quickly!It's very easy for the copilot to space out and relax a bit too much, since they don't have to do any work!Warn in advance before turning etc. if possible.

All that said, my 4.5 yr old daughter LOVES being a copilot!This half-bike allows my wife, my 7 year old son, my daughter and I to all go on rides together and explore a lot more than we could when my daughter was riding her little 16" bike with training wheels.Much more enjoyable for all this way!

Schwinn Hitch Hiker Trailer Review

I was looking for a good deal on these bike trailers that will have a short life at our household. Our twin girls are about one summer away from learning to ride without training wheels, and we want to do a lot of biking with them.

I think I found just the right product, buying two of these Schwinn models. You won't confuse these with the high quality Schwinns of your Baby Boomer youth, but they are made well enough. I expect they'll last at least a few years with minimal maintenance.

Assembly can be figured out easily, which is good since the instructions are for entertainment purposes only :) but have on hand both metric and English allen wrenches. It took about 20-30 minutes to put together the first one, about 15 minutes to assemble the second one. The hardware is cheap, so be careful tightening bolts and screws, and make sure you have the proper alignment of the pieces before tightening. If you've put together furniture from IKEA, you know what I mean.

The connection to the adult bike seatpost is solid. A block of aluminum holds a sturdy pin that attaches to the trailer arm. I leave the connection on the adult bikes and remove the post to detach the trailer. Quick and easy. And pretty stable. All of these kinds of trailers will have a little wobble because the connections are joints, but this trailer does not have a lot of play in the design. When trying this out for the first time, I would recommend holding your bike straight up and asking your child to get on the trailer (helmet on? check!), then walk your bike very slowly so they can get the feel of the thing, which they will think is weird. Only when they feel comfortable moving along slowly should you (in my opinion) get on your bike and ride.

My one complaint is that the bike trailers arrived scratched. One had minor scratches on the trailer arm, but on the other, the arm is scratched up pretty bad. The box was banged up but taped, indicating that one trailer had been bought, used, returned, then sold to me as new. I chose to keep it and not make a big deal out of it because it's structurally ok and I want to get riding. But I wish Target had been straight about the condition of them. The scratched up one should have been sold as used or repackaged.
